3 Ways to Start The New Year Right

3 ways to start the new year right

We felt so prepared. The ball was dropping soon and my husband and I’d finished our year-end project. We had all of our goals for the next year written down on paper, as well as all of our blessings that we didn’t want to take for granted. With the new year just minutes away, we felt so prepared to tackle new experiences with a new mindset.

Fast forward to 2020, and here we are again! We’re all mere hours away from the start of a brand new year!

I know you’ve seen a lot about goal-setting, making new year resolutions, changing habits, etc. No matter what you call it, now is a perfect time to make sure you’re “on track” (whatever that means to you) and moving in the direction that you want to go into.

“If you don’t know where you’re going, you’ll end up somewhere else.” - Yogi Berra

Over the last 8 years, my husband and I have made it a practice to intentionally prepare for the year. While it may look different now with 3 kids in the mix, we still make an effort to keep our goals in mind throughout the year.

As you get ready for 2021, here are 3 ways that you can start the year on the right foot, and get the best out of what you’re putting in:

#1 -  Review

You can't know where you're going without knowing where you've been, right? Well the start of a new year is the perfect time to look back over your prior year -- What did you want to do? What did you get to accomplish? What do you regret? What's left undone or unspoken?

It's best to tie up any loose ends before trying to move forward with anything new.

Take inventory of these things however you see fit. Write them down in a journal, write them on scraps of paper to collect in a jar, keep a notes app updated in your phone -- whatever you choose, make sure that you can get back to it easily and update it as things change.

#2 - Refocus

As you start the year with either a single goal or multiple goals in mind, it's important to approach it with a new mindset. You're older and more experienced than you were this time last year, so it only makes sense that you should have more skill, more tact, and more wisdom during this trip around the sun.

Try your best not to fall into old habits. As we know better, we should do better. Today is the perfect time to start on the right foot. Once you narrow down what you want to accomplish, critically consider whether you’re going about it the right way. If you have a trusted friend, get their honest feedback if you’re coming up blank.

#3 - Restart

Think of your life as a cell phone. Yeah, it'll run day in and day out, but when's the last time you restarted it?

One of my favorite sayings is this, “You can't pour from an empty cup.” With this in mind, don't start the year running on E! Make sure you do what you need to do to feel whole. Look back at this blog for ideas on how to shift your mindset and embrace your uniqueness.

I sincerely hope that you found this helpful! During a time where it seems the world is waiting for the clock to strike midnight and all of our problems to be solved, it’s important that we all take responsibility for what happens in our lives this year. Don’t just sit back and wait for things to happen. Show up for yourself!

How do you prepare for the new year? Do you have any year-end traditions or are you starting a new one this year? I’d love to know!
